Don't Judge a Book by it's Cover...(but sometimes I do)

I love book covers, they are a hint as to what to be expected in the book, but nothing is given away. When wandering around a bookstore those that catch my eye first are the ones with pretty, appealing covers. The ones that stand out. Here's a few that I like:

Charming, Eye-catching Covers  (summaries from Goodreads)

Author: Lauren Kate

There’s something achingly familiar about Daniel Grigori.
Mysterious and aloof, he captures Luce Price’s attention from the moment she sees him on her first day at the Sword & Cross boarding school in sultry Savannah, Georgia. He’s the one bright spot in a place where cell phones are forbidden, the other students are all screw-ups, and security cameras watch every move. Even though Daniel wants nothing to do with Luce–and goes out of his way to make that very clear–she can’t let it go. Drawn to him like a moth to a flame, she has to find out what Daniel is so desperate to keep secret . . . even if it kills her.

Book: Entwined
Author: Heather Dixon

Azalea and her younger sisters dance in the mysterious silver forest every night, escaping from the sadness of the palace and their father’s grief. Luckily, Azalea is brave and steadfast. Luckily, a handsome young army captain also has his eye on Azalea. . . .

Unbeknownst to mortals, a power struggle is unfolding in a world of shadows and danger. After centuries of stability, the balance among the Faery Courts has altered, and Irial, ruler of the Dark Court, is battling to hold his rebellious and newly vulnerable fey together. If he fails, bloodshed and brutality will follow. Seventeen-year-old Leslie knows nothing of faeries or their intrigues. When she is attracted to an eerily beautiful tattoo of eyes and wings, all she knows is that she has to have it, convinced it is a tangible symbol of changes she desperately craves for her own life. The tattoo does bring changes - not the kind Leslie has dreamed of, but sinister, compelling changes that are more than symbolic. Those changes will bind Leslie and Irial together, drawing Leslie deeper and deeper into the faery world, unable to resist its allures, and helpless to withstand its perils....

Falling Fast by Sophie Mckenzie Book Review

Title: Falling Fast
Author: Sophie Mckenzie
Publisher: Simon and Schuster
Tagline: This is life, not a rehearsal
Rating: (you should read it)

When River's all-girls' school joins up with the local boys' school for a performance of Romeo and Juliet, River auditions for a part and finds herself smitten by Flynn, the boy playing Romeo. River believes in romantic love, and she can't wait to experience it, but there's something about Flynn River can't quite work out, and as they spend more time together, she finds she's still a long way from understanding - or trusting - him. A roller-coaster story of first love and all the ups and downs that entails.

I've just finally finished reading Falling Fast by Sophie Mckenzie and what can I say? I love it. From River's image of the true love to Flynn's moodiness,  Falling Fast is unlike Sophie Mckenzie's other books. For one it is not a thriller and secondly it is the first romance trilogy not from a male perspective.

River - She loves Romeo and Juliet and their passionate love story, it's something she's seeking for herself. Now where would be a better place than behind the scenes during a Romeo and Juliet play? It's a love story, within a love story and all River needs to do is get the part of Juliet and she'll be all set. However it's hard when your beautiful best friend, Emmi, is up against you. It's even harder when you might lose the boy you love to her. Yet sometimes I found it quite hard to like her. River has this perception of the perfect love which is very artificial. She doesn't understand that for love sacrifices, both emotional and physical have to be made and above all a relationship balances on trust and time. Her own beliefs come close to hurting her on more than one occasion.

Flynn - He's not the typical moody guy out there, unlike some he has his reasons. Though Flynn is acknowledged by his peers he has never truly fit in. He's always the outcast. This is partly because he is very judgemental, his own private issues prevent him form getting close to anyone. Due to a not so simple home life, a not so great school life and an all round just-getting-by life, Flynn gets angry and he gets angry a lot. It's something that'll probably take a lot of getting used to for River.

It was great to read how River and Flynn's relationship evolved from 'I don't think he likes me' to 'I know'. I loved seeing the increase in River's confidence. At the start she did not believe in her abilities to act or be able to attract a guy and later on was afraid of Flynn breaking up/cheating on her but that begins to change as she becomes more trusting of Flynn. As it's the first in a trilogy I'd love to see River grow in confidence and can't wait to read what happens next.

There's a prequel to Falling Fast! Acting Friends, is about River and her two best friends Emmi and Grace. As Falling Fast was set in River's GCSE year (age 15 -16), Acting Friends is set in her first year of high school and about how their friendship began.

Life at her new school is not going smoothly for River. After accidentally making an enemy of the troubled Shaz, she hopes at least to have found friendship with classmates Emmi and Grace. However, when it comes to the boy of her dreams, can River count on any of her friends?

Acting Friends has been written by Sophie Mckenzie for World Book Day 2012, she is allowing free copies to be downloaded from her website:
